On The Water

By John Warren

Racing:

The CYC Mid Winter Regatta is now over and in the history books as one of the best Mid Winters in recent years. Total entries approached 150 yachts!!! The weather in February didn't treat us as nicely as it did in January, however the fun factor remained very high and everyone had a grand time at our beautiful yacht club. Saturday the winds were very light getting over the starting line, but filled in later in the afternoon for a nice finish. Sunday was not so kind to us.after trying to start the complete fleet, we decided to call back the two divisions that had already started and wait for more wind. That wind we had hoped for never came and the decision to cancel Sunday's race was made. The Race Committee tried very hard to get Sunday's race under way, but it wasn't meant to be. Many of the racers thanked us because they didn't want to drift around San Francisco Bay in the afternoon rain so they motored back to the bar for fun times and bragging rights for the whole Mid Winter series.

Once again, like in January, our bar was packed both days with racers and the atmosphere was electric. We had videos of the racers so they could see themselves out on the water and made for interesting conversation as they looked at the fleets sailing around the bay. That evening the band upstairs, Bay Area Blues Society, entertained our racing guests while the downstairs was hosting a very nice romantic dinner for Valentine's Day. The yacht club on Saturday was full to the brim and very alive. The awards ceremony on Sunday was well attended and the upstairs ballroom was filled with beautiful silver trophies. Many, many trophies were given out and the recipients were very pleased.

The perpetual Aotea Trophy winner was:

  • Ted Goldbeck Chica
  • Julle Le'Vicki Smogen III
  • Ron Kell Abigail Morgan

Best Overall Performance by a CYC member:

  • Jan Borjeson Basic Instinct

Overall the Mid Winter Regatta was one of the best attended because a lot of people worked many hours to make it the premier winter racing series on the San Francisco Bay. When you are around the club, please thank Aaron DeZafra, our Race Chairperson, our entire Race Committee and club staff and employees for a job well done!

Now, while we're still on the subject of racing, let me remind you that we have the Horsfall/Vincent Memorial race on March 13th and we start the Friday Night Racing Series on April 9th. Please sign up now for more fun times on the water. Also I would like to ask that if you are interested in helping on the race committee for the Friday Night Series, please contact either Aaron DeZafra or me. It's a lot of fun and gives you a chance to meet other people at the club.

Cruising:

Our first cruise this year is to Pt. San Pablo Y.C. on March 27th. This is definitely one of the more fun yacht clubs on the bay as I have personally experienced myself over the many years that Sharon and I have been cruising. The cruise leaders for this event are Bill and Chris Canada and they will have a sign up sheet on the bulletin board. Let's kick off our cruising season with a large crowd and show the Pt. San Pablo Y.C. our Corinthian spirit.

I'll see you at the club and/or out on the water. Everyone have fun this month, be safe and enjoy!
