On The Water

Corinthian yachtsmen and yachtswomen are in for some great fun over the next few weeks. The Friday night series is at record levels of participation and if you are one who comes to the Club on Fridays, you know how hard it is to belly up to the bar. Thanks to all you racers, cruisers and especially volunteers, our 2000 season is going fantastically.
Cruising
The April Benicia cruise was just perfect. Two great days of sailing, albeit with a little rain coming home and great food prepared by the Benicia Y.C. caterers. It seems that a birthday party was being held in their clubhouse and they had a band (a great one by the way). The Benicia club members graciously invited our whole group to join in and we danced the night away. Thank you, Fred and Sonja.
Our upcoming May cruise is actually a double header. Saturday we head to South Beach Y.C. led by Bjorn and Agneta Ervell with an armada of 17 boats, to feast, plunder and pillage the town. On Sunday those that wish (or are able) continue on to the San Leandro Y.C., this time led by Sally Huse. Sally says there is plenty of room in the harbor and lots to do in San Leandro - outlet store shopping, golf, etc. Call Sally for more details. Sounds like a lot of fun.
Attention Parents - Youth Sailing Summer Programs
The San Francisco YC is once again offering its summer youth sailing program to members of other clubs. It was awarded "best in the Bay" by the officers of PICYA. They offer a range of half-day two-week courses beginning June 19 and concluding August 11. Call 435-9525 for information. Mention that you are members of Corinthian. Also, the Marin YC and Sailing Education Adventures are offering courses beginning June 12 through September 1 (775-8779). Information on both is posted at the club. How about applying for the Corinthian Women's Junior Sailing Scholarship? Call Beverly Dunn for information.
Racing
Your race committee has some exciting news! The Corinthian and Tiburon Yacht Clubs have conceived and will hold the First Annual CYC/TYC Perpetual Friendship Trophy Regatta on Saturday June 17th. Plan on racing for the honor of your club! Racing instructions are available at the clubhouse, and here is some hype from my partner in crime from TYC, Harry Blake:

Crew Meeting 1100 Hours; 1st Gun 1220 Hours
This regatta is open to members of either club, sailing boats with valid PHRF rating certificates. Each club will field a minimum of 6 boats that will form teams to compete for the CYC/TYC Friendship Perpetual Friendship Regatta Trophy. This regatta will be held each year on the 3rd Saturday of June with CYC hosting in even years and TYC in odd years. People with dual memberships cannot sail for the same club two years in a row.
This year the regatta will be sailed in two divisions - spinnaker and non-spinnaker. Individual trophies will be awarded for top-finishing boats in each division, and the CYC/TYC Friendship Regatta perpetual trophy will be awarded for the best overall performance of a yacht club in the regatta.
Prior to June 17, Dan and I will concoct some complicated formula that will, hopefully, make sure that the best performing team will actually win the trophy, which we have already purchased. It's a 16-inch high Lucite sailboat, sitting on a custom wooden base that Hans Roeben has generously agreed to craft to match the Lucite. For obvious reasons, I will be sailing for TYC this year.
Those of you who know me, know I like to win sailboat races, and I REALLY WANT TYC TO WIN THIS ONE! It would be a pity if TYC couldn't perch this beautiful trophy in their brand new clubhouse. As of this writing it appears TYC might be able to hang in there with Corinthian. So far we have the J/105, Joy Ride; Moore 24, Frenzy; Wylie 31, Moonshadow; J/24, Another White Boat; and the Catalina 27, After Five to name a few. So, Corinthian racers, get Bottom Bob out to your boat and get out to the starting line.
As noted above, Corinthian YC is the host this year. Dan and I are asking that each boat provide a $10 entry fee. This will cover the cost of some cheap drink glasses for the individual winners and hiring Bill Canada's band, Night Train. When we get back to the club after the race, there will be a no-host bar, dancing to Night Train, followed by dinner ala the Friday night racer's grille at a modest cost of $10 per person. (If you've had the racer's grille on Fridays, you know how good the food is and what a bargain ten bucks will be.)
From a coupla guys who like to have fun, here's one formula for doing just that at this regatta:
- Get your boat over to the Club if it isn 't already there so that you can attend the crew meeting (at 1100 hours), drink some coffee, and start to spook the competition, dropping lines like, "Russell wouldn't have beat me last Sunday without that lucky shift."
- Win your division of the race;
- Raft up at the club after so that you can modestly gloat over your victory, have a beverage of your choice, dance to Night Train, and eat a great dinner;
- Hit the Corinthian bar after dinner where you can really start to gloat;
- Spend the night on your boat in the harbor;
- Do Sunday brunch at the Club in the morning;
- Sail home so you can go to church and thank your maker for the great time you had at this fabulous regatta!
