Commodore's Column
By John Bogue
December 2000 brought us the Annual Egg Nog Party and Santas Brunch presented by The Corinthian Women. Thanks to Paula Hansson for her fine efforts heading up the holiday decorating crew; Esther Lerner Carrico for chairing the Egg Nog Party; and Patty Thompson for taking charge of the Santa Party. The mens chorus did a great job singing a repertoire of holiday songs led by Jackie Taylor at the Egg Nog Party. Thanks to Santa, Mrs. Santa, the elves, and all Corinthian Women for providing a wonderful childrens event enjoyed by several new and old members.
The News Years Eve Party was a success with a good turn out, fine food and dancing. Kudos to the Entertainment Committee and special thanks to Mary Sue Thomsen for the props and other decorative items, which transformed our club into a Paris venue complete with bistros, boulevards and Eiffel Towers.
The club repairs, mandated by the Health Department, were underway on January 1. The bar and surrounding cabinets were emptied and removed in order to prepare for the necessary work to begin. Full details of the trials and tribulations of this remodeling will become a club legend. The ballroom floor has been cleaned and refinished and the stage curtains have been cleaned, fire proofed and re-hung. The lift has been delivered and a temporary weather shield will be put in place until the fabrication of the exterior walls is completed. We are still planning on a Pre-Opening Day completion date. The lower deck timbers, which had to be specially ordered, were received about four weeks ago and the hardware from the galvanizer arrived last week. The light at the end of the tunnel is visible for the inside work to be completed and we are finishing the work on the lower deck as well. Howard Folker has been assisting the Port Captain by overseeing many of the tasks currently taking place. Thank you, Howard.
The tax assessor reassessed the two small parcels, which we had traded with the adjacent property owner at a much higher value. This reassessment has been revised thanks to Staff Commodore John Colvers efforts.
The harbor withstood the storm and high winds of January 10 & 11 with only a slight ripple. The breakwater was not overtopped and minimal damages resulted in the harbor.
It is a testimony to the wisdom of designing the harbor for the 100 year storm. A debt of gratitude is owed to all those who worked on the planning, design, construction and maintenance of our new harbor.
We had a great January Midwinters race with over 100 boats racing. The party was packed and dinner was a sellout. It was a wonderful event both on and off the water, even if the winds and tides were less than fully cooperative. Many thanks to Ron Roberts, Rear Commodore, and all participants who worked hard to make the race and party a great experience.
The Cooks and Waiters event was a resounding success with a record attendance and superb food and entertainment. Our Vice Commodore Dan Carrico deserves a standing ovation for his for his tireless efforts on this event.
We are looking forward to getting our beautiful club back in shipshape soon. A sincere thank you to all members for your continued patience.
