On The Water

By Dan Carrico

Racing

Corinthian’s 2000 boating season is off to a great beginning. As water activities increase, this year and every year at this time let’s appreciate why we are a yacht club and what a great club we have by sharing the Corinthian spirit through boating activities. March was full of happenings and April really is! So, here’s the scuttlebutt on what happened and what to put on your calendar.

This year’s Horsfall/Vincent Memorial Regatta (around Angel Island in your choice of direction) was held March 18th and had 21 Corinthian entries. It was fair sailing for all and all completed the race. Mike Eagan in Sabertooth smoked the competition for a first in Spinnaker, Marcia Peck was second and Arthur Juhl took third. In Non-Spinnaker, from a field of 17, Dave Holscher and Steve Etheridge took the bullet in Sockeye, Wolfgang Hocke was second and John Nooteboom third.

On March 25th Karin Dilou’s Third Annual Scandinavian/American Regatta held in co-operation with the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish Chambers of Commerce, was better than ever. Eighteen boats entered in all and the big surprise was that six Knarrs showed up – enough to make a one-design class. Winds were light to moderate but everyone finished.

As for the race, Corinthian member Kjell “Jim” Skaar right out of box in his first race aboard Peer Gynt V took a hard won second, besting number three by almost four minutes! In the Spinnaker division, Jan Borjeson and his “rock star” crew aboard Basic Instinct took a bullet and in Non-spinnaker, it was Julle LeVicki first and John Bundschuh second, new CYC member Wolfgang Hocke a third.

As a condition of competing, each boat must have a Scandinavian as crew. One boat threw their Norwegian crew overboard and Karin had to come to the rescue with a glass of Danish Akvavit to ward off a cold! Guess the Viking blood still runs hot. Other than that, everyone behaved. The evenings dinner was attended by many dignitaries, friends and racers. People raved about Chef Ian’s food and the band.

The First Angel Island Regatta was held April 1st with Mark Thompson acting as Race Chairman and Kay Rudiger as point on organization and promotion. They both did a great job as did other Corinthians Rob Guinn and Jim Snow. Regatta proceeds went to the Save Angel Island League (SAIL). SAIL is working in association with Save America’s Treasures and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to restore the Angel Island Immigration Station. In the spirit in which the regatta was organized, three yacht clubs, CYC, SFYC and St.FYC helped host the weekend’s events.

The regatta was subject to the weather gods who certainly played a trick on the participants. With 30 knots of breeze Friday, unfortunately Saturday turned out to be hot and calm, which combined with a strong ebb tide to work against most of the sailors. Forty-five yachts were entered in the race but only ten finished. Most of the sailors were able to get a good tan though!

Winners from CYC were Julle LeVicki in Smögen III, who took 1st place in Non-spinnaker 1 and John Bundschuh in Sharona with a 2nd place in Shorthanded division. Take home trophies were beautifully framed photos of the Angel Island Immigration Station, taken by our very own star photographer, Marcia Peck. The regatta concluded with a dinner and party in the Clubhouse ballroom with dancing to the party tunes of Bill Canada’s band. All in all, a great day and a fun time, despite the lack of wind.

Our Friday Night Series began last Friday, April 7. At this time 76 entries are in and more are coming. With Friday lunches starting in May, this year’s series should be more fun than ever! If you are a new member, want to get on a boat for the Fridays, or just want to get more fun out of your club, Friday afternoons are going prime time.

Cruising

Our March cruise to Pt. San Pablo Yacht Club was a harbinger of fun times ahead for all who join in Corinthian’s 2000 cruises. Bill and Chris Canada did a wonderful job. The “meatloaf cook-off” was again popular. Top Corinthian honors went to Marsha Peck and Sondra Blake with two wonderfully tasty concoctions but truthfully, no one could guess what was in ‘em! Only seven boats made the trip, but many came by land and we all danced to Bill Canada’s band, Nightrain and had a great time.

April’s cruise to Benicia has, as of this writing, 23 boats making the trip. Cruise leaders Fred and Sonja Conta have provided a most impressive set of cruise instructions - eight pages of useful stuff including current and tide charts! This year in a departure from “the Blithering experience”, the yacht club will provide our meal. For those competitively minded (and what sailor isn’t?) Fred is running a PHRF handicapped race - complete with prizes! Way to go Fred and Sonja, we are all looking forward to your cruise.

In yet another example of service, in addition to his many other good deeds for the club, Richard Solomon has volunteered to become Corinthians’ PICYA delegate for this year. If you haven’t attended a PICYA (Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association) dinner, they are held monthly the first Monday of the month at yacht clubs around the bay, Richard recommends it. He’ll welcome the company.
