Who Are Those Guys GALS?

by Marcia Peck

The Corinthian Women—Prior to 1990, the female spouses at the yacht club belonged to the Ladies’ Auxiliary. The wife of the commodore automatically became the president. Martha Vujovich, wife of Staff Commodore James Gibbs, changed all this. Having difficulty even putting together an Auxiliary board, she conceived of a new organization of club women that would include all women, even regular members. With some new blood, and a new set of by-laws, The Corinthian Women was born.

Infused with new energy, this group has become a driving force within the Club. Today, practically all special holiday events are hosted by The Corinthian Women, the most recent being the Easter Brunch and egg hunt. In the past, the club manager and staff were responsible for most events.

The now famous Corinthian Women’s Sailing Seminar is staged every May, empowering many women to become sailors, and recruiting them as club members. The last seminar was just held at the club and there were thirty-five jubilant graduates.

Gifts to the yacht club from the Corinthian Women, made possible by sales from the club store, include the shore boat, Mermaid, the new flat screen television in the bar, the remodeling of the Club Library, the elegant picture frames of historic Club photos in the Grand Ballroom, the front hall display case, and even Frances’ office chair! The club store has been very successful and items offered are wonderful, due to the capable ordering and selling by Corinthian Women volunteers. A big job, year round!

The Club would not be the fun, exciting place it is today, without the efforts of The Corinthian Women. All women club members are welcome at monthly board meetings, and encouraged to help with Club events. It is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. This year’s board is headed by diminutive, but strong-like-a-bull, president Sharon Marsh Barr. Other board members are: Loretta Madden, Edwina Servanti, Alix Fagerstén, Marie Jorajuria, Paula Hanssen, Bev Dunn, Sandra Solomon, Tari Nix, Cindi Marques, Esther Lerner Carrico, Theresa Prescott, Susan Travis, Jane Elkins, and Shala Morid.

Our hats are off to these hard-working women and all they have contributed to the Corinthian Yacht Club!
