Eight BellsStaff Commodore Milt Stannard died peacefully at his Tiburon home on October 18, 2004. He was 93. Milt joined the Club in 1962 and owned a 26 foot cabin cruiser, the Minnie, which resided in the harbor for many years. He served as Commodore for two years in 1968 and 1969. He and his family retained a strong affection for the Club through the 42 years of their membership and maintained a consistent presence at Club functions. In his last years Milt and his lovely wife Mignon were loath to miss a single Sunday brunch at the Club after attending services at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. In 1962 Milt and his fellow San Francisco commuters persuaded the Red and White Fleet to start the Tiburon commuter ferry service. They started by chartering a powerboat to take them across the Bay. Born in San Francisco in 1911, Milt moved with his family to Los Angeles when he was quite young. He graduated from Hollywood High School and the University of California at Berkeley. In 1936 he returned to Los Angeles to marry and start his family. His entire career was spent with Pacific Telephone Company. He was transferred to San Francisco in 1960 bought a house in The Reedlands and resided there ever since. Milt was very active with civic organizations. He served on the board of the Alto-Richardson Fire District (now Southern Marin Fire District) for 14 years, five of them as chairman. He was very active with the Navy League and served with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Army Reserve, and the Marin Power Squadron. The Stannards have been members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church for 44 years. Milt served there as an elder. Milt is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mignon, two sons, Bruce Stannard of Flora Lakes, Oregon, and Craig Stannard of Portland, Oregon, two granddaughters and four great grandchildren. Memorial services were held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church on October 26, 2004 with a strong contingent of Staff Commodores in attendance.
