The “Most Eventful Trip” award was handed out to David Schwartz, Ron Roberts and Dan Carrico on Lady Hawke. These masterful skippers were successful at leaving the dock hauling a runabout while having it still tied to the dock - always fun to watch, wrapping the line hauling the runabout around the props and successfully running a ground on to a mud flat with Lady Hawk, all in one afternoon!
This year’s “Best lame excuse for not attending the Tinsley Island Cruise” was awarded to Sean Torsney, something about his fiancé suggesting that he should instead attend a wedding at the Corinthian Yacht Club.
Sally Huse hosted a wonderful cruise on that Wednesday and Thursday to the Delta Yacht Club which sits as the next island east of the St. Francis YC’s Tinsley Island. By the time I awoke and finished my first cup of coffee on Friday morning the CYC fleet had departed for Tinsley, all vying for prime locations for the weekend. It was a notable difference having only the two clubs attend vs. last year’s 4 clubs and 100 boats, definitely a more relaxed feeling.
After getting settled in, first item on the agenda, Odem races (remote control one design sail boats), unfortunately no wind….. But thanks to Steve Schneider, Harry Blake, Trip Ames and Bill Canada for making the effort to transport these wonderful boats to Tinsley.
Those same boys from Paradise Cay; Bill, Trip and Steve, once again treated us to a wonderful Martini cocktail party on Friday night. Nice touch on the tux upper half combined with shorts sported by the bartenders and I especially liked Mr. Canada’s patent leather shoes. I would also like to thank Chris Canada for the wonderfully prepared teeny weenies. The Hor d’Overs were especially appreciated, thanks to those that brought such wonderful delectables.
The BBQ scene was quite remarkable, never have I viewed such a variety of meats, fish and assorted vegetables so masterfully flipped and continually reviewed for correct tenderness. And this year you could actually find space at the BBQ pits.
Let me thank Mr. Eric Artman for providing his service as our Friday night DJ, hosting a great selection of toons to dance to. Awards for most creative African dancing were given to Sondra Blake and Anne Scully, Harry and EJ please calm them down before for next years party.
Saturday morning came all too quickly. The masses, sleepy eyed and with coffee cups in hand, descended to the power boat dock awaiting for our friends Herb and Wilma Rodricks to bring on the smoked salmon, beagles and crème cheese. They have provided this wonderful breakfast for several years and a special thanks goes out from all of us for their generous effort. I always knew that Encinal YC was valuable member of the yachting community but never to the level recognized by this year’s loss of their Bloody Mary cocktail party. I’ve spoken to Maui Bob and he is planning on coming up with a solution next year’s Saturday morning, he will also be taking suggestions.
I think that everyone was so relaxed that this year’s games were under attended, no winner for horseshoes or dominos. Wally Quinn talked quite a large story early in the day about kicking butt on dominos but was later found by the pool sound asleep. Thank you to Susan Travis for handling the task of game master. And at least a CYC group won the bocce ball tournament, congratulations to the Bundschuh family team. And what can I say but “what happened” to our volleyball team, a loss to the San Francisco Yacht Club? I’ve spoken to Ron Roberts and we will be coordinating the transportation of sand to the top of our yacht club’s roof for a practice volleyball court, please note, be careful running after out of bounds balls. Practice, practice, practice…
Maui Bob was only sighted for a couple of minutes at 1:45 while he laid out the pina colada effort to be hosted by the CYC. He has passed along his thanks to Dr. “not long to remain single” Johnson, the mighty mixer king Tony, Jack “big blender” Cooper, Will “pour me another” Deady, Ian “rum and coke” Johnson, Eric “add more rum” Artman and of course Allyn “I though I was going to Maui to look at time shares” Schafer. At last count 400 sticky sweet, marvelously cool and refreshing pinas were served. And not to forget our frisky island serving girls; Paula, Tari, Andrea and Kim, thanks for taking great care of us.
Our friends at the San Francisco Yacht Club hosted Saturday night’s Margarita cocktail party at 6:00 while most of us thought “another cocktail party ?” But the members of the Corinthian have always had the “jump right in” positive attitude that made for another successful party. Thanks to our last year’s table award winners, Marlene Donoho and Ginny McCarthy for the table judging this year. This years first prize awarded to those delightfully wacky pirates the Artmans and Bogues with “Treasure Island”, great outfits ! Thanks Commodore Dan for making the announcements and handing out the awards. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the band and the craziness ensued to late into the night.
Now in past years there has been an award for first boat to depart on Sunday morning, the earlier the better, since heading home 60 miles in a sailboat makes for lllloooonnnnngggg day. Somehow, wanting more than just another award, Hans Roeben decided that he would add a fish story to the event. As related by his first mate, Sally, after departing early only to find the motor overheating, after returning to dock and placing on swimming attire and a snorkel mask, Hans decided to check the salt water intake on the bottom of his boat. To his surprise, as well as ours had I not seen the picture, he found a 5 inch fish trying to make the journey back to Tiburon via the intake valve.
