Salmon Derby - August 20th

by Herb Rodricks

What started out as a get together of a few Corinthian fishermen having a fun weekend of fishing and friendly competition has grown into a full-fledged fishing derby open to all Corinthians and their guests. I use the term competition very loosely as this event is meant for fun times and your enjoyment. If you catch salmon and possibly win a prize, so much the better. If you have never "wet a line" you will have all the help you need or want and it won't jeopardize the potential beginner's luck.

There will be two divisions in the derby. The first will be for Member Boats. The other division is for the sport fishing party boat Wacky Jacky and is limited to the first twenty-five Corinthians and/or guests who sign up. The Wacky Jacky will make a special trip to pickup and return all anglers to our club.

The Derby will begin on Sunday, August 20, at 0600 hours with the official weigh-in at the Clubhouse at 1430 hours. After the weigh-in we will allow the weigh masters until 1500 hours to determine the results. No-host cocktails at members bar are until 1730 hours, at which time we will adjourn to the member's dining room for dinner featuring what else but fresh salmon. No, you will not have to surrender your freshly caught salmon for dinner. The salmon you catch is yours to keep and enjoy as you like.

The salmon for dinner is being graciously provided our sponsor, Dave Gilbert of Tiburon Land Co. and a few of his fishing buddies. The fishing buddies shall be nameless, as they are Dave's ace-in-the-hole in the unlikely event he can't provide enough salmon for all. Then and only then will his buddies come to Dave's rescue, and we all know he will never hear the end of such bravado—“I’ll catch enough salmon for everyone”—yeah, okay Dave.

Cash prizes will be awarded:

Wacky Jacky Member Boats
1st Prize $75 Largest Salmon Largest Salmon
2nd Prize $50 First Limit of Salmon Largest Average Weight Of Salmon
3rd Prize $25 First Salmon Caught First Boat With Limits

We will provide everything for you, and I do mean "almost" everything including, but not limited to, the greatest people to fish with - namely CYC members and their guests. For the Wacky Jacky division, show up at the clubhouse on August 20 no later than 0550 hours with your lunch. If necessary we will provide you with: one day fishing license, rod & reel, 2 salmon weights, bait and hooks. Also included are sweet rolls and coffee en route to the fishing grounds, beer and soft drinks, tip for the deckhand, dinner with wine at the Club, and all the prize money you win.

Member Boat division entrants will provide for themselves, but will partake in the dinner. Incidentally, with regards to the dinner and the generosity of our sponsor, all entrants in the Member Boat division will be allowed to bring one guest to dinner at no extra cost. That's an awfully large amount of salmon you have to provide, Dave, and I hope your fishing buddies are true friends or you will be hearing from more people.

The cost for the entire day of our Salmon Derby is $100 per person in the Wacky Jacky division, and $25 per person in the Member Boat division.

So don't be left on the dock by the bay. Call the club office to make your reservation and get ready to set the hook.
