The Corinthian Burgee Gets Around
compiled from various sources by Harry Blake
Sally Huse reports that the CYC burgee flew last month on the Ukranian Sail Training Ship, Khersones, on a six-day sail from Bremerhaven, Germany to the North Sea and back to Wilhelmshaven, Germany. Brand-new cadets (16 to 19 years old) learned the rigging, how to unfurl and furl the sails, and the difference between a sheet and a halyard (in order to pick the correct one in a hurry day or night - not an easy task). For instance, after the third day we had winds of Buford 6-7 and sails has to be reduced at 2 a.m. by the cadets.
The STS Khersones was built in 1988 in Gdansk (Poland), is 109.4 meters long (359 feet), 6.6 meters draft and 14 meters beam. She has 3 masts, all 49.5 meters tall (162 feet). She carries regular crew of 40, plus 48 cadets, 3 teachers and between 64 and 96 paying passengers, two of whom were Hans Roeben and Sally Huse.
