Commodore’s Column

by John Bogue

If you don’t believe there has been a lot going on at your Corinthian Yacht Club, just take another look at all the enclosures that arrived in your June mailing. To mention a few recent activities: The 2nd annual CYC/TYC Friendship regatta, Father’s Day Brunch, the Ballena Bay Cruise and the Master Mariners Wooden Boat Show.

Rivalry and fine fellowship were clearly apparent during the CYC/TYC Friendship Regatta held on June 16. There was a great turnout from both clubs and TYC took the lead and won the second annual regatta.

Father’s Day Brunch brought a record high number of fathers and their families to Members Dining. Attendees listened to great jazz performed by Harry Blake and Bill Canada along with Espen Skaar and Judy Hall. In addition to celebrating Father’s Day, Art Muller was awarded a plaque commemorating his life membership status.

Thanks go to Fred and Sonja Conta for planning the Ballena Bay Cruise. All cruisers enjoyed a great meal prepared by Ballena Bay Yacht Club member volunteers. Following the dinner many members from both clubs danced the night away to music provided by a DJ.

The Master Mariners Wooden Boat Show brought some of the finest wooden yachts on the bay to our harbor for Club members and guests to see, board and enjoy. Appreciation is extended to Harbormaster Hans, Craig Swain and all those who helped move boats and performed additional duties to make this festive event possible.

In case you didn’t catch the information in The Corinthian Women’s Column in the June Telltale regarding CPR classes, may I remind you of the excellent opportunity to become certified in CPR being offered to our membership. Classes are being presented on three separate days. Check the bulletin board for dates to sign up. Thanks to Sandra Solomon and Sonja Conta for bringing these extremely worthwhile classes to the Club.

Trophies were awarded on Friday, June 22 to the winners of the first segment of the season’s Friday Night races. Bravo to Rear Commodore Ron Roberts, Race Chairman John Bundschuh and all other Race Committee volunteers who are making this series so successful.

Recently the Club’s computer system was upgraded and includes the installation of a new accounting software program that has facilitated generating billing and financial reports.

At the June 28 Board meeting, the Flag officers and Board members appointed a Nominating Committee to select a slate of Flag officers and Board members for the year 2002 to be voted on at the November 9, 2001 Annual Meeting. Staff Commodore Mark Thompson will serve as chair of the committee and additional members include Ed Fischer, Joe Holko, Staff Commodore Bill Canada and Membership Chair Anita Dillon.
