Summer Sailstice Sleepover

by John Arndt

The Corinthian Yacht Club has created a unique celebration to coincide with sailing’s new holiday, Summer Sailstice. In 2002 Summer Sailstice falls on a Friday which coincides with CYC’s regular weekly beer can series races. Always one of the more popular evening series on the Bay the yacht club thought Summer Sailstice would be a great night to add to the festivities.

Commodore Dan Carrico suggested the first CYC Summer Sailstice Sleepover. Summer Sailstice is the longest sailing day of the year and falls neatly between the end of the school year and the start of summer sailing. Why not get members and guests down to the club for a large sleepover aboard their boats? The usual Friday night buoy race will provide the starting point before buffet dinner and awards ceremonies. Then all registered race boats, Corinthian members and harbor tenants are welcome to spend the night aboard. A simple breakfast fare is planned for the morning of the 22nd.

Summer Sailstice is a great opportunity for sailors around the world to all sail on the same day and connect via a web site. All participants are encouraged to celebrate sailing by taking to the water on June 21st wherever they sail. The Summer Sailstice web site will help let people know what is going on in their area and provide a network for sailors worldwide to share in the fun.

Corinthian Yacht Club’s unique idea sounds like fun and is representative of the many creative ways in which Summer Sailstice can be celebrated. ‘I love spending a night aboard the boat in the harbor and Summer Sailstice is another great reason to do just that’ explained Commodore Carrico.
