Club Managers Report
by Ingo Schreiber
Much has happened besides my first vacation since joining the clubs staff. I visited the relatives in Munich and yes, you guessed it, I could not pass on the Oktoberfest. It always is held during the last two weeks of September and ends on the first Sunday in October, hence its name (logic or what?) Unfortunately though I had to discover that it has become too popular and that most of the Beer tents are so crowded by 3:00 p.m. already that access to them thereafter is extremely difficult, while finding a seat inside is nearly impossible. I finished my visit in Bavaria by attending the very last of this years cycle of the Oberammergauer Passion Plays.
While managing clubs in Canada, I became a Member of the industrys professional association: The Canadian Society of Club Managers, retaining this membership until today. This group holds an annual convention dedicated to managers education and updates on industry trends. Our web site was chosen as: Best in the Field of Sports and Athletic Clubs. We already received a wonderful Awards Certificate along with a very complimentary letter from Andrew D. Parr, the Societys Executive Director. The kudos for this success undoubtedly belong to Club member Bruce Powell, who volunteers huge amounts of his time to this project. Bruce: Many Thanks! Incidentally, Bruce actually worked so hard, that the web site's capacity has been reached and we will have to move to a new host, making room for, amongst other great things to come, this edition of your Tell Tale.
The September statements mailed earlier in October contained a flyer with the heading: Important Harbor Announcement, which seems to have created some confusion. The intent of this flyer was to advise on two changes: A) the fee schedule for berthing of members and guests in the Clubs harbor. There is no change in the policy that members are charged only after the second nights stay and guests after the first night. B) There is however a new policy in place, which governs the frequency by which both members and guests may use such visiting berthing privileges. The existing rule, that the tender basin is available only to members, was not changed, but restated with the new fee. In addition I would like to appeal to everyone to kindly register their vessels presence with the office and/or harbor personnel on every visit exceeding three hours. And we (the staff) would be absolutely ecstatic if we could receive advance communications of plans to visit the harbor.
Lastly comments on a few House Committee matters: The bar staff received new uniforms consisting of black vests for formal occasions, and red polo shirts for every day use. The Committee also adopted a rule banning the use of cell phones or similar devices from all public areas of the Club House, i.e.: upper and lower bar, ballroom, dining room, sun porch, lobbies, library and rest rooms. The decks are O.K.
See you on Cabaret night.
