Commodore's Column
By John Bogue
Midwinters II was a huge success in spite of the out-of-control dozer/backhoe that slipped down the hill toward the Clubs parking lot and dry storage area. A sincere thanks to General Manager Ingo Schreiber, Frances Ramage and all those who reacted so quickly to ensure access to and from the Club premises and for continuing with the scheduled race. Here is a fine demonstration of true Corinthian spirit in working together to make things happen.
The luck of the Irish was with us regarding weather on St. Patricks Day during the Horsfall/Vincent Regatta. Sunny skies prevailed all day and racers enjoyed afternoon winds of 18 20 knots. It doesnt get much better. Thanks to our Rear Commodore, Ron Roberts and the Race Committee for all your time and efforts! After the race many enjoyed Chef Ians delicious corned beef and cabbage and Mulligan stew. The Friday Night Racing Series begins on Friday, April 6 and the Racers Grill menu, served on the outside deck, will be available every Friday night throughout the racing season.
April 29 will officially mark the beginning of the boating season for 2001. Opening Day Committee Chair, Staff Commodore Diana Fischer and several committee members are hard at work planning this special event of the year that truly showcases our Club in the boating community. As part of the festivities on the Bay, the traditional PICYA sponsored boat decorating contest will take place and this years theme is A Yacht Odyssey 2001. Diana has informed me that CYC has an entrant in the sailing division and I would very much like to encourage any member who wishes to represent the Club in the power division to do so. If you are interested in signing up, please contact Diana. Entry forms are available in the Club office. Lets have a banner year and take first place in both divisions!
As many of us recognize, our beautiful Clubhouse, parts of which are approaching their centennial year, is in need of constant repair. We are moving right along with the reconstruction projects that were initiated at the beginning of the year. The deck adjacent to pneumonia alley has been completed. Both bars have been put in place, updated with up-to-code plumbing, etc. and have passed inspection by the Health Department. An impervious wall covering and new dishwasher (replacing the old one) have been installed in the kitchen and, in order to meet current code requirements, some additional plumbing work is being done. The lift construction is still in progress.
Happy Spring and I look forward to seeing many members at the Club on Opening Day!!
