FLASH! Corinthian Yacht Club Mid-Winter Regatta attacked by 36,000 pound excavator! Yes! On Feb. 17 a 36,000 pound excavator tried to jump off the hill onto the yacht club. You might have seen the photos in the Marin IJ. The fire department closed off the entrance to the club for most of the day on Saturday. On Sunday morning, they turned off our electricity and closed the club down. Yet, it appears that the darn machine didnt know who it was dealing with. With the help of myself, Ingo Schreiber, Dan Carrico, and Mark Thompson, the Corinthian Spirit won! On Saturday we not only held the race, but had a fine dinner with a wonderful band and dancing, too! Matthew Gorton and Hans shuttled people back and forth between the club docks and the deck at Sams. At one point on Sunday, Marshall Appleton, Commodore at the San Francisco Yacht Club, had even agreed to let us hold our trophy presentation at their clubhouse, as ours had been shut down. Fortunately, the excavator was removed, our electricity was restored, the race was completed and the trophies awarded without a hitch.
The Mid-Winter Regatta turned out to be a complete success! Thanks to Mark Thompson as regatta chair and the rest of the race committee. Special thanks to Peter Hogg and Shama Kota who devoted a great deal of time to ensure an accurate scoring of the race.
We had the Horsfall/Vincent Regatta on March 17. It too, was a great success. Top Honors went to Diana and Ed Fischer in the Spinnaker Division and Peter Birnbaum in the Non-Spinnaker division.
The Scandinavian Regatta was held on March 24. It turned out to be a really spectacular event. The rain gods held off until the race was completed. 27 boats turned out for the race. This was followed by a wonderful dinner/dance. Special thanks to Karin Dilou, regatta organizer, and Dan Carrico, who ran the race.
NOTICE OF REGATTA! Friday, April 6 marks the start of the Friday Night Regatta. This is our weekly regatta that runs every Friday through Sept.7. Volunteers are urgently needed. Please contact John Bundschuh, Race Committee Chair, or Ron Roberts to sign on for the Race Committee. Even if you think we have your name, if you are interested in helping the Race Committee, please let us know. Also, volunteers are needed for a committee boat. Please let us know if you have a boat that we could use for some of the Saturday races, if only for a race or two.
Also on the horizon is the Angel Island Cup Regatta on Sunday, April 8. Volunteers are needed for this event as well. If enough people are interested, I will hold a brief training session beginning at 11:00 am on Sunday, April 8. Those participating in the training may stay and help with the race.
