RCP Tiburon Mile Swim
by Robert Placak
RCP Events, Inc. is pleased to announce the 4th Annual RCP Tiburon Mile Open Water Swim. This competition is the worlds premiere international open water swim. Swimmers from around the world will be in Tiburon on Sunday, October 27, 2002 to compete for $30,000 in Cash and Prizes.
This years swim will begin at Ayala Cove, on the peaceful shore of Angel Island. The swimmers will head towards downtown Tiburon, and the docks of Sam's Anchor Café. This year we expect 850 swimmers to participate and over 2,000 spectators to line up along the Tiburon shore where the race finishes at the Corinthian Yacht Club.
Last year a record was set by Ryk Neethling, from South Africa, who finished in a spectacular time of 19:31. We expect even more competition this year as the world's best pool swimmers will compete against the world's best open water swimmers. Expected are swimmers from 20 different countries. Participating with the USA National Team members and Olympians are swimmers from Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, South Africa and Russia just to name a few.
Many local swim clubs will be in the water, as well as local triatheletes, open water enthusiasts and NCAA Collegiate teams for a chance to compete with the best swimmers in the world.
This race is open to all swimmers age 13 and up. Pledges are being raised for Special Olympics. Our efforts have been so successful that, to date, we have raised over $50,000 for this worthy cause. Special Olympic Athlete, Sam Silver, who recently attempted swimming across the English Channel this past June, will be swimming in his third RCP Tiburon Mile Open Water Swim.
