A Taste of Broadway
by Bruce Powell
Club members were treated to a great show last November 2, with dozens of Club members giving their all in a 2-hour spectacle. Led by the indefatigable Men's Chorus director Jackie Taylor, the show featured famous songs from Broadway musicals ranging from "Cabaret" and "Guys and Dolls" to "Oklahoma" and "South Pacific". Director Jackie Taylor threaded these disparate songs along a loose story line which made for a memorable evening. Called "A Taste of Broadway...with a Pinch of Salt," the show was quickly sold out.
After the full cast entrance with "This Could Be The Start of Something Big", Dan Carrico and Gordon Noble looked dapper as gamblers in their two numbers from "Guys and Dolls", while Deborah Dismukes feigned shock in her number "Take Back Your Mink".

Five Men's Chorus members got the audience cheering to their rendition of "Heart" only to be cut short with the surprise entrance of Esther Lerner Carrico as the voluptuous Lola in "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets".

A behind the scenes look at play auditions featured May Kramer, trying out for way-way-off-Broadway, and our own Dining Room hostess Jackie Gutterman singing "Second Hand Rose", and Fred Matteson giving his soliloquy from "Carousel".

Else-Liv Skaar then held the audience at bay with a musket and cowboy boots as she convinced us "You Can't Get a Man With A Gun". The plot then took a detour through Oklahoma, where Bruce Powell in cowboy boots and hat as "Handsome Will Parker" told us how "Everything's Up To Date in Kansas City" and Pascale Powell as Ado Annie explained, "I Cain't Say No".

This was followed by "Oh, You Beautiful Doll", "Lida Rose" and "76 Trombones" performed by members of the Men's Chorus along with Randy Saber, Deborah Dismukes, Esther Lerner-Carrico and May Kramer.

Act Two opened with a desert scene as the Men's Chorus, in attire that was very sheik, rode in on one verrry loonng horse, to sing "The Riff Song", followed by John Taylor weilding a scimitar as Ivan Skizavitsky Skivar, and Deb Dismukes as the veiled belly dancer in "The Rich Maharaja of Magador".

The audience hooted and whistled as Else-Liv Skaar strutted in black body suit and bowler hat in "Mein Herr" from Cabaret. The scene then turns to the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas with Gordon Noble as Old Blue Eyes and Dan Carrico as Dino, plus Robbie Cook doing a cameo as Sammy Davis Jr., followed by two solos, "Under My Skin" and "That's Amoré".

May Kramer sang two numbers from Brigadoon, followed by Esther Lerner Carrico singing "Memory" from Cats. In between, three Grouchos came and left before the audience knew what hit them.

The final scene was in the South Pacific, with the entire Men's Chorus in swabbie outfits, singing "There is Nothing Like a Dame", as Pascale Powell made her entrance as Nurse Nellie swooning "I'm In Love With a Wonderful Guy". This was followed by "Bloody Mary", a tribute to the Mary character played by Rosalind Colver. Ros then sang a beautiful rendition of "Bali Hai".
