The RCP Tiburon Mile
By Robin Schaefer
On October 27 Commodore-Elect Ron Roberts fired the opening shotgun to launch 650 swimmers from Angel Islands Ayala Cove to our own Corinthian Beach. Staff Commodore, John Culver and his wife, Rosalind, transported Ron and the press to follow the lead pack of swimmers as he has done each of the last 4 years since this Corinthian tradition from the 1950s was reinstated by Corinthian member and Event Founder, Robert Placak.
Among the 650 participants were no less than 20 people who either competed at the Olympics or the World Championships. The top 8 mens finishers were all 2000 Sydney Olympians, and the top 8 women were either Olympic Gold Medallists or members of the USA National Team. Overall mens Elite Winner was American Record Holder Chris Thompson (time 21:07) and the womens Elite Winner, with her 3rd title in 4 years was Triple Gold Medallist Brooke Bennett (time 22:35).
Congratulations to our own Hans Anderson who successfully completed his 1st ever navigation from Angel Island without a boat (in 54 minutes). Also, Ingo Schreiber, Matthew Gorton, Dick Slottow and all the volunteers of the Corinthian Yacht Club are to be congratulated. Over $50,000 was raised for Special Olympics Charity and over 250 volunteers helped make this race such a successful community event.
Anyone interested in volunteering for next year can contact 415.721.9990 or www.rcptiburonmile.com. Members with boats are always needed to ensure safety of swimmers in this event.
