CYC Sailor Breaks Trans-Atlantic Record

by Marcia Peck

I’ve already written about Peter Hogg’s previous exploits as a record-breaking world-class sailor. Last October he topped all of his records by crewing on Steve Fossett’s 125 ft. maxi catamaran Playstation, the world's largest racing catamaran.

They destroyed the trans-Atlantic record by making the 2,925 NM passage from Ambrose Light off New York City to Lizard Point in Cornwall, England in 4 days, 17 hours, 28 minutes, 6 seconds, averaging a speed of 25.78 knots. This broke the 11-year-old record set by Frenchman Serge Madec in the 75 ft. catamaran, Jet Services, by almost two days.

During the voyage, Playstation also set a new 24-hour speed record of 687.17 nautical miles (average speed of 28.6 knots), breaking the record set by Grant Dalton on Club Med in The Race earlier in the year. This is huge in the world of sailing records.

Steve Fossett, Stan Honey (also from the Bay Area), and crew have been honored and feted in three countries for this great achievement.
